Emerging From The Rubble
20 Oct 22 – 1 Nov 22
Staffordshire St presents Emerging From The Rubble a multi-disciplinary exhibition co-curated by Fauve Alice, Jasmine Shigemura Lee, Isabel Castro Jung and Rosalind Wilson.
Emerging From The Rubble is a collaborative hive of happenings dissecting the world through the collective perspective of a bug’s life. Insects are often a source of fear and disgust, creeping in through the cracks and crevices of the walls we have built to keep them out. They swarm around us in uncontrolled masses and exist in time frames that disrupt our linear understandings of the world. Over the course of the exhibition the artists will explore what we can learn from this collective other to reassess how we see and encounter these creatures in daily life.

In this playful and riotous show the four artists will activate the exhibition space with sculpture and performance pieces made from recycled and found materials. The content will evolve throughout the exhibition, as different people enter the space, a landscape edited and added to by performers and visitors alike. There will be daily workshops for children to create artwork and a cabaret of performances exploring insect behaviours from sound, vibration, camouflage, illusion and transformation.
The show develops at both a pace of the slow and specific evolution of adaptive species and with the accelerated speed of the ephemeral conditions of the current material environment. What can we understand by looking at non-human ways of being? How can linear time be disrupted? How can we speculate toward alternative futures away from our current path toward total ecocide?
Made possible with ACE National Lottery Project Grant.
